The development of Liberia infrastructure is a key priority offer for the European Union (EU), according to an EU statement.

The EU provided financial support of Euro 6 million or 6.87 million for the pavement of the Sanniquelle to Loguatuo road with Asphalt.

The Amount is part of the EU’s Regional Envelope for west Africa allocating EURO 14.2 Million, with the European Investment Bank contributing 17 Million EURO.

The EU says, “Liberia has approximately 500 km of asphalted roads, most of which were recently upgraded with co-funding from the EU”.

The EU observed that of the international connecting roads, only the road to Sierra Leone is asphalted on the Liberia side.

It noted that all other International links are gravel roads that require improvements.

According to the EU the 47km Sanniquelle Loguatuo road linking Liberia and Cote d’ivoire is the only remaining non asphalted section of west Africa Highway linking Nouakchott, Dakar, Lagos, being part of the ECOWAS and MRU Regional Corridor.

This project also includes the building of a ‘One-Stop’ border post to facilitate the rapid processing of cross-border trade.

The 47 km Sanniquelle-Loguatuo road project cost in excess of EURO 52 Million”, says the Head of EU delegation in Liberia, Madam Helene Cave.

This is a vital contribution to a project. I am proud that with an effort spanning several years, my team has achieved to leverage significant additional loans and in convincing the EU Investment Bank and Africa Development Bank to partner in this initiative” Madam Cave said.

The EU Envoy said the initiative “will dramatically improve Regional connectivity, Trade, Electricity Transmission and the well-being of Women, Men and Children……”

Madam Cave said the support is part of a broader development portfolio for Liberia’s boost.

The government pro-poor agenda for prosperity and development focuses on improving the Economy and Jobs creation through investment in Infrastructure development.
