The Liberian Government (GOL) and the European Union (EU) have
signed Eighty-Eight Million United States Dollars (US$88M) for the first
four Financial Agreement during a signing ceremony to jumpstart the
new phase of the EU-Liberia development partnership or the new
European cooperation instrument known as NDICI-Global Europe.
The new instrument is now replacing the European Development Fund (EDF) and will run from 2021 to 2027, a total of US$210 million have been earmarked.
The four new support programs for which a brief signing ceremony
took place at the offices of the Delegation of the European Union in
Monrovia for which the Minister of Finance and development planning;
Honorable Samuel D. Tweah Jr. and EU Ambassador Laurent Dela-
housse finalized the first phase of support of the EU-Liberia
developmental partnership include; Strengthening inclusive and
accountable democracy in Liberia (around 16.5 million US dollars),
Youth Rising: EU Support to Technical and Vocational Education and
Training (TVET) for Young People in Liberia (around 31 million US
dollars), From Productivity to Product, Linking Peers to Peers (P2P)
(around 24 million US dollars and Forestry and Conservation for
Sustainable Economic Development Program (around 16.5 million US
dollars).
The four separate financing agreements is therefore highly intended for
the promotion of supporting democracy, youth empowerment and
proving the needed assistance to the forestry and conservation for a
sustainable economic development programs.
Speaking during the finalization of the signing ceremony, Ambassador
Laurent Dela-housse, Head of the EU Delegation to Liberia indicated
that he was happy with the efforts of the EU to identify with the
Liberian Government’s strive in ensuring economic development and
prosperity.
“We have four programs this time and there will be four more
programs that we are working on with the government and that will be
signed sometime next year. The first program we have today is on
elections. This is not only about the 2023 elections; it is also a longer
term support to the National Elections Commission.”
Ambassador Dela-housse also disclosed that the donation coincided
with the 50 th anniversary for the European Community which in 1973
established its first office in Liberia and has since been upgraded to a
full diplomatic mission; the Delegation of the European Union to the
Republic of Liberia.
